New Connections on Orkut

with 36 comments

Logged into my orkut account after returning back from 5-day trip to Goa. And what I see on my homepage is 9 friend requests and none of the requester looks familiar to me. No doubt orkut has made life easier by helping us find old school and college friends but the annoying aspect of orkut is getting friend requests from strangers. Especially women are bugged by these friend requests from the romeos of the cyber world. Don’t know if the same happens with the guys. All those guys out there do tell if you are also flooded with friend requests from the juliets on orkut.

orkut1.jpg

The above picture is my orkut homepage where I have 9 new friend requests(all males) from people I don’t know. I am not open to making friends on internet so all these friend requests would be denied by clicking ”no”.

Apart from the friend requests the scrapbook and the message inbox is flooded with messages from anonymous like –

“wanna have friendship with me” – The simplest friendship message

” hi i dont have any chat friend or girl friend……can we?????????” – This message gives an impression as if orkut is a dating site.

“hi girls, well i am a goan guy, aged 23 workin abroad. i am a simple and down hearted guy. i am tall, medium complexion and a very honest man. i am looking for my life partner. If any girl is interested in me, kindly message me on orkut or leave your telephone no. thanks alot “.

– This message was sent to the members of a girls’ college community. Ever thought that orkut would play a matchmaking role in India. May be time will come when it would leave behind all those matrimonial sites like shaadi.com and bharatmatrimony.com who claims to be no.1 matrimony in India. Infact I think orkut would be more effective than these matrimonial sites as the bride/groom can find all the details about the prospective groom/bride from their profile and not to forget the testimonials. So all the guys and gals out there getting ready for their marriage, make your profile look good and impressive and bribe your friends to write a perfect testimonial for you before the person looking for you hits on your orkut profile.

Orkut recently entered its third year. It has become one of the most favourite timepass leaving behind Yahoo messenger and other chat services. Orkut is addictive and I am also a victim of it. All is fine with orkut till you are able to stay in touch with your friends but becomes irritating when you receive friend request and messages from Anonymous especially if you are not in favor of making internet friends.

Orkut is a great social networking site but like everything comes with its disadvantages, same is true with orkut. I have never come across any guy in the similar situation. All guys there on orkut let us know if your scrapbooks and inbox also gets loaded with friend requests from anonymous gals.

  1. wonderfully written. gotta agree with you, even i haven’t seen boys receiving friend request from girls. I think its a characteristic of Indian men, they’r bravest on the net. I wonder if they have the guts to go and talk to a girl just like that 🙂

  2. Not from gals. But if the guy has many female friends in the list and if his scrap book has many scraps from his female friends, then you might get friend requests from other guys. :-). I think they also check for your popularity.

    I usually ignore those strangers.

  3. i do agree with you…in fact i hv many frnds in my circle who enjoy putting add requests without leaving even a scrap to girls…this feels real bad.

but on the other hand, most of the girls keep accepting requests and feel proud of the increasing number of guys in their list.A girl with more than 500 frnds is a very common thing on orkut.they just leave one impression for guys-“Add them..n they wil accept ur request”.(mind u..der s nothin specific)

Expecting a reverse situation in India is next to impossible unless the guy is someone like Salman Khan.

A few days back i got some 15 add requests from girls in a week..n thts really a number.May b most f them were fake or whatever…but getting those unknown request is really annoying.thts y i hv put a notice in my orkut pro too.

the way u expressed urself ws awesome.really impressive.

  4. Yes the friend’s requests from strangers and scraps requesting for friendships are annoying aspect of orkut for girls. Every single female on orkut faces this problem of 10 friendship requests everyday, but then there is no solution to this problem. May be with time, when the indian society has opened up more (in say 10 yrs from now), and people will start realizing that it is cheap. Then only it can go away, but I dont think there is any technological solution to it, without hampering the networking capabilities of orkut.

  6. @ Ujjwal: it seems saketsamrat got 15 friend requests from girls. ..now that is a big number.

@Jo: That is another revealing fact that guys having more female friends get requests from other guys.

@saketsamrat: I agree with you that many girls in order to increase their friend numbers in the list accept the add requests from the anonymous guys…There are some classmates of mine who feel proud when the friends in their list increases and even when the scrapcount increases. But that was very new to me – a guy getting so many friend requests from girls..Didn’t come across that ever…

@sudheersahu: I don’t think there is any solution to the problem till the attitude of people changes.

@amitesh: hey amitesh, I know how many friend requests u send to all those girls on orkut…:P

  8. Hey there,

Nice post. Well, I once change my name to amrita on orkut and put some gen pic. The result: an avg request of 5 friends daily. It was some fun man. But soon I got pained and decided to revert my sexuality. But this episode at least made me realize how despo guys are. Everywhere! 🙂

  9. i truely agree with this write up…..people who sometimes send friend requests dont even bother to mention who they are….
Instead of it being called “friend request” it shud be called ” get acquainted with – ”
    neways a good blog entry….

  10. nice words.
    frank expression.
i agree with you … i guess we have to live with it … and keep saying no to strangers.
maybe orkut could find a better way (as in like having an option to ignore all people except your friends… strangers may be allowed to send just one message after identification (without anoynmous).. thats all.
this may solve the problem to good extent …. but still you have to find way to fight fake id.

the idea expressed under are not my personal view … but that is also a point i guess

getting mails or friend request from someone you do not know is an attempt to discover the unkown.
to know people around the world.. to belive in the almighty and power good .
that the world is bad .. devil all around.. still .. and yet you have a few good souls.
so … in case … maybe the person who was intreseted in friendship ..or who needed some help should be allowed to contact i guess.

    personal experience:
i got a person who was senior in ICAS … .. he is presently in states for higher studys .. he has helped me a lot … giving information about universities abroad … i thank him from my heart .
another from india : he helped me getting more information about the exams pattern.
yet another : she was a great help for coding part of my robot ..

so i belive it is not that friend request is a problem .
its not that orkut is getting converted into a matrimonial site.

i belive it has to tackle a greater problem : the curbed curtailed mentality of india.

  13. @sunil khera all those 270 friends in my list are those people I already knew personally..None of them are strangers or anonymous ppl…

    priyankavarma

    January 7, 2008 at 4:40 am

  14. u knew all them 278 personally since ur birth?.. No. all of them – all 278 people u knew – once might hve been strangers and anonymous ppl to you..bt gradually they became ur friends…..

Getting friend requests from strangers is not a big issue..ki you waste your time writing abt it.. even when i was in college i would get friendships request in personal.. from gurls.. but thats mean. i write those thing on blogs.?? hayyeeen?

even now orkut has security options.. no one can see or write your scrapbooks, your album, ur testimonial.

  15. @sunil: hmmm
“even when i was in college i would get friendships request in personal.. from gurls.. but thats mean. i write those thing on blogs.?? hayyeeen?”

you are probably one of those people who priyanka has written about in her post. secretly trying to up the cause of desperate morons who keep blasting girls’ profiles.

and btw if you did not want to tell people about the fact that you get friend requests from girls, you did not have to write it here 😛

relax I can understand how desperate people can become.

  29. Yep!
It’s true that girls receive a lot of friendship requests from unknown people.

In fact, a male cousin of mine made a fake profile of a girl just for the enjoyment 😛 …. within a month, the number of that profile’s friends went up to 150~160 =D
With several testimonials a week and 50~60 fans and 1000’s of scraps

On the other hand, his own profile(which was 2 years older) had 35 contacts =D

I feel pity for girls 😦

  30. Such requests will keep coming.Accept the ones you like, ignore the ones you don’t.No need to make a big issue about it.People asking for friendship are not criminals, and there is no need to maintain a ‘holier than thou attitude’ on the net.If you feel bugged so easily, when you have the simple option of ignoring requests from strangers, what are you doing on orkut?Try bhakti.com.

  33. I totally chime in with your feelings. To connect with someone whom you already know makes the real benefit of Orkut all powerful. when it gets mixed with strangers, it spoils all the fun.
I’m sure that in the next few years, when the internet trolls get frustrated with no friend requests accepted, Orkut can become a powerful social community where parents can start to look to find suitable matches for their sons/daughter.
